Poetry by Jamie McKenzie

Cassette

Each day
Without fail
Without amplification
Chosing carefully
She play tapes
Plays
And replays
Tapes
Memory cassettes
Recorded and saved
Long ago
Captured in some sound studio
Of the past

She plays wedding songs
Carriage songs
Lullabyes
Of younger times
Her Irish barmaid voice
Throaty and certain
Cutting through the haze and babel
Of wedding
Or wake

She plays tapes
Over and over
Again and again
Memories dancing on a silent screen
As she rocks
And listens
Listens
And rocks
