About the Author

Laura Lewis is a former teacher, Web site developer, staff developer and a third-year doctoral student at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education in Curriculum and Instruction who is also a full-time mother of daughters Hannah and Hillary.

Laura has taught in diverse communities from a low-income housing development in St. Paul, Minneapolis to Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan. In l995 she received her M.A.T. from The George Washington University Museum Education Program where she specialized in object based teaching as it takes place within a museum environment and through computer-based simulations of the "real world." In l996 she was hired by the Illinois State Museum to help create the online exhibit "At Home in the Heartland Online." The Website received online acclaim making it onto such lists as Kathy Shrock's Guide for Educators.

A chance meeting with Jamie McKenzie at the first Museums and the World Wide Web conference led to their co-creation of the Virtual Museum Workshop. Through this workshop Laura met and coached teachers in Illinois and Michigan in the creation of simple websites with a powerful message--use the medium to connect with local cultural arts organizations. Inspired by this experience she worked extensively with faculty and students at the Woodberry Forest prep school in Virginia helping teachers coach students in the creation of websites as diverse as: honoring Chaucer, analyzing the French Revolution and exploring Rome of the Caesars.
